LAST RITES FOR MRS. GRIFFITH, Ashland Resident Passes in Grand Rapids After Long Illness
Funeral services conducted by Rev. C.A. Graham of the Grant Community church were held in the Ashland Center Baptist church September 3, for Mrs. D. J. Griffith, 64, who passed away in the Reeds Lake Sanitarium in Grand Rapids last Monday, following a long illness.
Ottis Cox, daughter of Nicholas and Eliza Cox, was born in Cayuga Lakes, Seneca county, New York, January 14, 1866. While still an infant, her parents moved to Ohio, later coming to Michigan and locating in Ashland. In 1883 the family went to Illinois, where the subject of this sketch graduated from the normal school at Sugar Grove. Later she went to Iowa, where she was married to D.J. Griffith of Onowa, November 29, 1890.
Mr. and Mrs. Griffith came from Iowa to Ashland in 1902 and that township has since been their home.
Mrs. Griffith was a member of the First Congregational Church of Onowa, the Grant Community Church and Queen Lodge, Daughters of Rebekah, of Ashland. Devoted to her home and family she still found time to perform many services for others and she will be much missed in the community which had so long been her home.
Besides the husband Mrs. Griffith is survived by two daughters, Donna at home, and Mrs. E.J. Stone of Fremont; two sisters, Mrs. H.W. Morley and Mrs. R.S. Hall of Angola, Indiana; and three brothers, R.J. and William Cox of Grant and Joseph S. Cox of Newaygo.
