GERALD SMITH
 Gerald "Shorty" Smith, 60, of 4404 67th St., Urbandale, died of emphysema Tuesday at Mercy Hospital Medical Center. Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Hamilton's Funeral Home. The body will be cremated following services.
 Mr. Smith, a life-long Des Moines area resident, retired as a truck driver for Pulley Freight Systems. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War.
 His survivors, all of Des Moines, include his wife, Sandra; a son, Jerry; a stepson, James Larson Jr., a daughter, Linda Smith; two brothers, Merle and Clayton; two sisters, Kate Jolly and Irene Clifford; and five grandchildren.
 Friends may call after 2 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Central Iowa.
